Indoor & Outdoor Intergenerational Developement

The benefits of bringing together the young and old generations created the vision for an intergenerational care, education and recreation space at Cargenbridge. A proposal has been created based on the needs identified in the region and a feasibility study of the long term dis-used Cargenbridge site on the outskirts of Dumfries.

Project Overview

Where It Started

During the creation of the South of Scotland Masterplan, Jaybees (Childcare) Limited highlighted an opportunity to expand their existing childcare provision in Lochmaben, bringing the unique approach that has been adopted by Jaybees since 2010 to the Cargenbridge area of Dumfries. The purpose was to meet the growing demands in childcare as there was no ‘inhouse’ care or creche within the New Dumfries Royal Infirmary (DGRI).

Natural Environment

We recognise the importance of not only the built environment for regenerating the Cargenbridge site. The interconnecting outdoor spaces are at the heart of the redevelopment to promote a happy, healthy lifestyle and ensure both physical and mental wellbeing. Engaging with the community, academic partners and stakeholders will be integral to shape a shared vision for the indoor and outdoor spaces at Cargenbridge that respond to local needs.

Intergenerational Bonding

Jaybees belief in the importance of embracing intergenerational bonding by bringing together the young and old combined with embracing indoor and outdoor spaces aligns with the vision for an intergenerational care, education and recreation space at Cargenbridge. The aspiration for the site has been warmly welcomed attracting several health and wellbeing opportunities that could be delivered within the full development.

Cargenbridge Development Mini Masterplan
  • The Let’s Get Biking team is excited to be part of the development at Cargenbridge. We are eager to improve the options for those biking with us so that they can have access to safe, easily accessible cycling spaces that all the family can enjoy together. We plan to expand the service by increasing the number of special needs bikes available and in order to do this we will require to have a purpose built base for our volunteers and staff to work from. We look forward to collaborating with everyone involved to explore the options for meeting the goals and aspirations of our charity.

  • In order to fulfil the vision of breathing new life into the former ICI site at Cargenbridge, connecting it back to the town and bringing much-needed regeneration and community re-engagement will require close collaboration with the community and local partners to shape a shared vision ensuring any developments respond to local needs.
    — John McGee
  • The outdoors underpins our ethos and children are at the heart of everything we do. Outdoor experiences are remembered for a lifetime and playing outdoors should be a fundamental part of childhood. We nurture ‘free-range’ children and have been looking for the last three years for a suitable site where we can bring our dream to reality.
    — Jackie Bell MBE
  • What has been developed looks exciting, with its mix of development and green space and would be a good example of how well developments can blend with nature. Indeed, here nature is integral to the success and use of the nursery. It will encourage use of the outdoors, improve activity levels and increase interest and enjoyment of the natural surroundings.
    — Dr Stuart Graham

Cargenbridge Site

Part of the site has been dis-used for over forty years and is now heavily vegetated.

Owned by Scottish Enterprise, the site extends a total of 26.82 Acres and was previously part of the Dupont Site. Located on the outskirts of Dumfries, the area surrounding the site has undergone major redevelopment in recent years including implementation of additional infrastructure and development of the new DGRI within close proximity to the site.
